ABOUT THE GROUPFollowing my Open Meeting talk on Heraldry back in February 2011, this Interest Group, with at present 15 members taking a very lively part, is very much up and running. Our meetings include “home” sessions that enable us to explore, at our own level of knowledge and involvement in “EXPLORING HERALDRY”, what this Historical-cum-Political-cum-Social-cum-Scientific-cum-Artistic subject entails, given added point by external visits (see below). Our programme is for nearly a year’s monthly sessions, till July 2012, with four external activities/visits: Thrumpton Hall (Oct 2011); Nottinghamshire Archives (Jan 2012); Flintham Parish Church (March 16th); Bottesford Parish Church (July 20th) – all including presentations, mostly short intros, and practical activities. We have already begun discussions on a continuation of the sessions from September 2012 into 2013, with the intention that these should look again at the same or connected topics, but adding extensions of these as well as newer ones into the programme, to make it easier for new members to join us as we go on. Sessions “at home”: in the Feignies Room, Keyworth Village Hall, Elm Avenue - I have “plans” for these sessions, but they are already being modified and re-ordered according to needs and wishes of members. Costs so far: for Keyworth sessions - £2.00 per head per session for the Feignies Room (maybe rising again when the new Parish Council charges come in); for visits - ranging from £10.00 per head (Thrumpton) to £4.00 for the Nottingham Archives, and perhaps much the same amount as the latter for donations to Flintham and Bottesford Churches (in the latter case, we will discuss an “end-of-year” lunch at Paul’s Restaurant or a nearby pub?) – we have agreed to “up” our regular charge per head, so that any excess gained on weekly subscriptions will go towards our “end-of-course” lunch & maybe some printing costs. Needed: a notebook of at least A5 size, pens & pencils (including basic colours). Not essential, but to add interest & involvement, a simple camera would be useful (many good digitals now available cheap). For the visits, a few cars will be needed, although the Nottinghamshire Archives (a very good resource for researchers other than our “Exploring Heraldry” group) are best reached by bus to the Nottingham Rail Station.
