News - 2011 Archive22 Dec 2011The next meeting of the discussion group “Putting the World to Rights” will take place on Monday, January 9th, 2012 at 2pm in the Parochial Church Hall, Keyworth. group meet every 2nd and 4th Monday from 2.30pm to 4.30pm. The
venue is now Sue Brittain's home. Sue can be contacted on
0115 9374751. Previous knowledge is not essential and all are welcome.
Sue is keen to stress that this is a genuine group initiative where all
members work together.
21 Nov 2011The last meeting in 2011 of the Good Food and Fine Wine Group will be on 1st December. The meetings will re-commence on 2nd February from 2 to 3.30pm in the Bar area of the Village Hall for a further 6 fortnightly sessions and there is room to accommodate new members. We are a very happy group (specially at the end of the session!) so if you would like to come come along phone Kath on 937 4296.

09 Nov 2011New Group - Jackie Fisher (0115 9372898) and Jackie Mullins (0115 9376176) are jointly leading a Lunch Club. Affordable lunches will be organised on the first Thursday of the month.
The first lunch will be at The Salutation on Main Street,
Keyworth. Meet at the venue at 12 noon for 12.30pm. On Thursday
2nd February 2012. Members of the group will agree the next venue
at this inaugural get together. Membership of the group will be
limited to 22.
The group will be launched at November's Open Meeting where Jackie Fisher will take names and contact information.

all the latest event
information. The updated list is in the What's On section. Illustrated Talks - All members are invited to sign up at the Open Meeting for Les Robson's "The History of Nottinghamshire".
Depending on numbers the talks will be held in the Methodist Hall and
there are five in all. Les delivered a very interesting series about
National Parks so we look forward to hearing all about our own county.
Christmas Party - Please note that vouchers for the Christmas party
will be on sale at October and November Open Meetings and that the cost
will be £7.50. This event is limited to 150 members and will take place
on December 14th. Groups information:
Humour
- the 2011 dates for the Humour group run by Roy Ainscough are:
Tuesday 18th October , Tuesday 8th November, Tuesday 13th December, all
at 1.00pm in the Methodist Hall.
Yoga
is cancelled for 30th September and 7th October. Back to normal 14th
October. Unfortunately this group is heavily subscribed and we have
been compelled to maintain a waiting list. Philosophy
- For those who attended the sessions earlier in the year this is a
follow up and Alan Morris has advised that only those with a knowledge
of Philosophy would benefit from the group. Alan will be on hand at the
first meeting. The first meeting will be on Monday 3rd October in
the BAR AREA at the Village Hall and will start at 2pm and finish at
approximately 4pm. Sue Brittain will assist in facilitating the
meetings and can be contacted on 0115 9374751. Computer Groups
- With effect from September 28th the groups will meet at the Main
Entrance to South Wolds school every Wednesday at 3.45pm in order to
sign in. When all the group is assembled you will be escorted to the
computer area with Peter and SW's I.T. person, either Mike or Ben.
Beginners and Intermediate computer group members will attend on
alternate Wednesdays.Please contact Peter Tomlinson, the group leader

- Regardless of the language you wish to learn all will be available on
Mondays, term time only with effect from Septeber 3rd. The process is
interactive and the languages available should meet everyone's needs.
Anyone wishing to take advantage of this opportunity should go to the
Main Entrance of South Wolds School between 3.45 and 4pm to sign in and
when everyone is gathered you will be escorted to the language lab
where Mike or Ben will show you the ropes.The sessions must finish by

Miller launched this discussion group at the last Open Meeting.
The group will meet monthly, initially at Stan's home. For

26 Jul 2011Tour the St. Pancras Hotel with the Architecture Group The
tour on Friday 23rd September 2011 is now fully booked. It may be
possible to arrange another tour date, more news when more information
is available.
25 Jul 2011Tour the St. Pancras Hotel with the Architecture Group
This
iconic building was erected when the Midland Railway built its London
terminus at St Pancras, was designed by Sir Gilbert Scott and partially
opened in 1873 and fully opened in 1876. For many recent years it
has been unoccupied until Marriott Renaissance Hotels acquired the
building and has renovated it to become one of theis international
hotel chain’s flagship hotels.
For a short time guided
tours of the hotel are being offered and we have managed to book one at
1 pm on Friday 23 September 2011. The cost is £5 for the tour and
we are leaving participants to make their own travel arrangements
because some of us will be staying over in London for the weekend.

24 Jul 2011New Group - Good Food & Fine Wine - to enjoy! This
group will run fortnightly from 22nd Sept on Thursday afternoons
2pm-4pm, in the Bar area of the Village Hall. The sessions
will be along the lines of a tasting of one or two dishes and a
tasting of a couple of wines. The cost will be modest
and the numbers limited, due to space. So if you think you
might like to join or if you want more information give Kath Oakley a
call on 937 4296.

the 12th July. Roy Ainscough has planned the next two meetings for Tuesday 9th August and
Tuesday 6th September, both in the Methodist Church Hall starting at 1pm.

from 10-12 in the morning in the Methodist Hall. We shall be
making flower broaches using squares of fabric, cotton or cotton
polyester are the easiest to use. Details of what to bring are

13 May 2011Short Walks - Gloria Wright has taken over as group leader from Barbara Wallace. The
walk on Tues 17th May has been moved forward to Monday 16th and will be
at Cotgrave Country Park. Meet at 10.00am at the Village Hall Car Park
for cars to Cotgrave Country Park Car Park. Refreshments at
Granny's Kitchen afterwards. On
April 19th the Short Walks group rambled in the Prestwold area of
Leicestershire. This was the last walk led by Barbara Wallace
before she and John head off to their new home in Yorkshire.

10 May 2011Drawing group - This
lively, friendly and enthusiastic group are looking for new members to
join their sessions. It would also be great if there is a member out
there with an aptitude for showing those less skilled the various
techniques needed to develop their potential. You do not have to be an
art teacher! Ability levels do vary and this adds to the group’s
attraction especially for those who simply want to try their hand at
drawing for fun. Come along to the Feignies room on any second or
fourth Tuesday between 10.00am and 12 noon or come along to meet Gill
and Malcolm at the open meeting.

21 Apr 2011West Bridgford U3A have organised a visit to The Holocaust Centre , Laxton,
on Saturday 30th April with a coach leaving from West Bridgford
Library car park at 9.15am. There are 6 places left if any
Keyworth members would like to join them. The
cost is £13 to include
the coach travel and entrance to the Museum and to The Journey
Exhibition. They have also booked a speaker and plan to leave at
4pm. There is a cafe on site that will make up sandwiches if
pre-ordered at £2.50 per sandwich (with garnish egg, cheese
or tuna). Coffee/tea is available at £1. Visitors are welcome to bring
their own sandwiches. They advise travelling to West Bridgford by bus to avoid parking problems. Please contact Jacky Arnold
on 0115 933 2905 who will allocate places on a first come first served
basis.

- Our changed day for the April meeting to Wednesday 27 April has a
change of venue. There will not be a meeting in the Methodist
Church Hall but members are to travel to Long Eaton to visit the
‘Living Threads’ group’s annual exhibition of work. Anyone wishing to go on the visit should contact Jackie as soon as possible so that car sharing can be arranged.

- There will be a first meeting on Thursday 7th April at 10.30am in the
Methodist Church Hall, Chillwell Road, Beeston. If you know
anyone who might be interested please spread the word.

- This month's short walk will be to Cotgrave Country Park and will be led by
Ken Doyle. Please meet in the village hall car park at 10.30 for car
sharing to Cotgrave.
27 Feb 2011New Horizons - Visit to the RHS Flower Show at Tatton Park,
Cheshire on Thursday, 21 July 2011. The coach departs Keyworth at
08.00 and leaves Tatton at 16.00. The cost is £34 per person to
include coach fare and show entrance. Vouchers are available from
Jackie Fisher (0115-937-2898) or the New Horizons' booking table at
Open Meetings. Tatton’s RHS Show is the Northern equivalent of
the Chelsea Flower Show and is seen on TV.
Craft Group - The next meeting is 28th March 2.00pm to 4.00 – Silk Painting. The April meeting will be on Wed 27th April 10.00am to 12.00 (i.e. not Easter Monday).

12 Feb 2011Keyworth Quiz
- There was a good turnout on the 7th February to support the U3A
Village Quiz team when they competed against BGS, last year's
winners. The first set of questions was on 'Transport' and the
all-male BGS team took an early lead. The U3A team fought hard
over the remaining three sets but were eventually defeated, with a very
respectable 43 to 56 scoreline.

- The next meeting is on 28th February. Fran Turnbull will show
us how to make paper lace: a craft knife, cutting board and
scissors are needed, paper and card will be available at the class. Future
activities will be wool-wrapping, card making, tealeaf folding, silk
painting and ribbon embroidery; the dates will be fixed for when tutors
are available.
